How to tell if you need a tap water filter?

Tap water filter – should you buy one?

If you’ve been drinking tap water your whole life and you’re suddenly told that it may not be the safest option, or if you’ve been an avid consumer of bottled water, but you’re told to ditch bottled water in favour of tap, you may be a little confused as to which option makes more sense. There is an ever-increasing consensus that bottled water isn’t necessarily healthier than tap, and it’s an absolute drain on the environment. Tap water on the other hand, is gaining more attention, and advocates for tap water argue that it’s safer and a more ecological choice compared to bottled water.

Does freezing water kill bacteria?

In an attempt to ward off illnesses caused by bacteria, people resort to all sorts of methods to sanitise water and make it safe for consumption. Boiling water, exposing it to UV lights and filtering it through special filter media are the most common ways to destroy disease-causing bacteria and viruses present in tap water. What is a boil water notice?

Boiling tap water for drinking purposes is not necessary in the United Kingdom, however, in certain cases, water companies or local authorities may issue boil water notices for a limited period of time instructing people to boil their water before consumption. Most commonly, boil water advisories are issued because of parasitic bug outbreaks. Indeed, microbial pathogens are the main culprits that prompt water companies to advise consumers to boil their water before using it for drinking or preparing food.

Outbreaks caused by high levels of Cryptosporidium, E. Coli and Giardia found in tap are perhaps the most common reasons why tap water becomes unfit for drinking without being boiled first. These outbreaks may not be frequent, but when they do occur, they affect hundreds of thousands of households, and sometimes, the notice to boil water can last for even two weeks like in the case of a Cryptosporidium outbreak in August 2015 in Lancashire that affected 300,000 homes.

Water is perhaps the most important fluid to human existence. We understand the importance of “clean” drinking water both in terms of health and well being. However, when you drink tap water you’re likely drinking a lot more then you bargained for – fluoride, chlorine, trace hormones and the condition of your pipes might account for things like rust.
