Volatile Organic Compound Water Filters

Volatile organic compounds (or VOCs) are substances that do not occur naturally in drinking water. VOCs are carbon-containing chemical compounds that evaporate from water at relatively low temperatures. VOCs are man-made and result from commercial, industrial or residential products such as fuel oils, gasoline, cleaners and degreasers, solvents, dyes, paints, inks, refrigerants and pesticides. Once these substances reach groundwater levels the need to purify and filter the water coming from contaminated private water wells becomes extremely important. VOC water filters are special filters created to counter the effects of such water-borne contaminants.

When spilled or improperly disposed of, VOCs will evaporate, however, some of it may be soaked up by the ground and due to rainfall or snowmelt, volatile organic compounds can reach the groundwater table, and then migrate underground to nearby wells. VOCs are a threat mainly in areas with heavy industry, where the distance between the well and the source of contaminants is relatively small. The level of contamination depends on other factors as well: geology of the soil, depth of the well, amount of the spill or contamination over time.

Activated Carbon Water Filters

One technique to purify water is activated carbon filtering. The water is passed through an activated carbon bed, which removes contaminants and impurities contained in water. Carbon water filtration efficiently removes chlorine, benzene, pesticides, and all volatile organic contaminants. As water is passed through, the carbon adsorbs contaminants and unwanted chemicals; carbon binds all the impurities with itself and let clean water stream through the filter.
