Save money with the Watts Carbon Block Filter Dual Pack!

Carbon block filters are well performing, cheap and easy to maintain water filters used to remove impurities and contaminants. Thousands of minuscule pores make carbon probably the most adsorbent material, being uniquely efficient in filtering water. Carbon filters remove impurities such as chlorine, volatile organic compounds and other chemicals.

Watts Carbon Block Water Filter Dual Pack

The Watts Carbon Block filter is more effective than filters containing granular activated carbon, due to its larger ratio of activated carbon surface and because powdered carbon blocks are denser, thus, water will flow more slowly through it, which means that the longer water is in contact with carbon, the more efficient the removal of contaminants is.

The advantages of using activated carbon for water filtration purposes

Activated carbon has been successfully used throughout history for water purification, being considered one of the oldest methods for filtering water. In ancient Egyptian cultures, charcoal was known as a purifying agent and was used for medicinal purposes. Nowadays, activated carbon is used in the water filtration industry either as a filter on its own, or as a pre-filter in more complex systems such as reverse osmosis water filter systems. Carbon filtration is used not only in water filtration, but also in air purifiers, industrial gas processing, in the recovery of precious metals and even in cigarette filters.

But how does activated carbon work in the process of filtering water and how does it clean water? Activated carbon filters work through a process called adsorption. As water is passed through the carbon block of the water filter, harmful molecules are essentially trapped inside the porous structure of the carbon substrate. Activated carbon can remove the following contaminants from water: asbestos, cysts, lead, certain pesticides, trihalomethanes (by-product of chlorination process), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Coconut shell carbon filters – an eco-friendly approach to water filtration

Activated carbon is extensively used in water purification due to its high porosity and large surface area, which makes it a highly valued adsorbent material. The most common natural substances used as base material to make activated carbon are lignite, bituminous and anthracite coal and peat, wood and coconut shell.

coconut shell as water filter

Coconut-shell based activated carbons are predominantly microporous and are the least dusty, thus, they are very efficient when it comes to organic chemical adsorption. Compared to other types of activated carbon, coconut-shell based activated carbon filters have the highest hardness, which makes them ideal for water purification.
