Finding the best suitable water filter system for your household can be a tricky task. For many, it might seem like an impossible mission due to the broad range of different filtration systems available on the market.

Without any doubt, it can be a long road to find the right water treatment solution. The first thing you should do is to understand the issue you are dealing with.

You can do this easily by getting your water tested. The result of the test will give you a whole picture on the quality of your water and it will also identify the contaminants and impurities you should focus on.

The purpose of our ultimate water filter guide is to help you understand each water filtration method products use to purify your water. In the first part of our water filter guide we discussed gravity water filters, reverse osmosis filters and UV light filtration systems.

In this article, we are going to take a closer look on inline water filters, activated carbon filters and limescale filters. Let’s see how each work and what great qualities they rely on when removing contaminants from your drinking water:

Pure 2.5″ x 10″ Carbon Block 5 Micron Filter Dual Pack Review

Carbon filters are a popular filter media used in most water filter systems in domestic settings. Activated carbon is recognized as the most efficient taste and odour improvement filter media that operates through a process called adsorption to remove harmful chemicals and contaminants as water passes through the carbon filter bed.

Are carbon water filters safe?

Activated carbon is one of the most widespread filter media that can be found in almost any water filter system, be it a reverse osmosis system or a regular under-sink water filter. Their high microporosity and large surface area makes carbon filters very good at adsorbing volatile organic chemicals, herbicides, pesticides, chlorine, disinfection by-products and a range of other chemicals. Apart from their advantage of being a highly adsorbent material, carbon is also a natural filtration media that adds nothing to water, leaves no aftertastes, and actually significantly improves the taste of water.

Are activated carbon water filters safe? Should you be aware of any concerns given that they are one of the most widely used natural filter media? In this article we’re going to address the most common concerns people have with respect to activated carbon filters, and how you can deal with these concerns.

Omnipure SCL10 Chlorine Filter With Scale Inhibitor Review

Chlorine and water hardness are the two most common elements affecting the quality of tap water. Getting rid of chlorine from your tap water can significantly improve its taste and odour, making tap water a much better alternative to bottled water. Lime-scale deposits are not only difficult to remove, but they are downright annoying especially if they start causing problems with your coffee maker or water heater. All these problems can now be handled with the help of a single filter cartridge, the Omnipure SCL10 Chlorine Filter With Scale Inhibitor.

This Omnipure water filter cartridge is granular activated carbon and polyphosphate 2″ x 10″ inline filter. This filter reduces not only chlorine, but also other chemicals used for disinfecting water and pesticides. The SCL10 inhibits scale formation, which makes it a highly appreciated filter in many areas with hard water.

What do activated carbon filters remove from water?

As a water filter media, activated carbon has many applications in the field of water filtration, as it is a highly adsorbent material and a natural way of obtaining filtered water. Fridge filters, shower filters and many domestic water treatment units contain activated carbon in order to remove a wide range of common contaminants found in tap water. Its high capacity to remove chemicals and impurities has been recognised since ancient Egyptian times.

Water filter systems usually contain either granular activated carbon (GAC) or powdered block carbon, and multi-stage filtration systems can contain both. Because of their higher ratio of contaminant removal, carbon block filters are deemed to be more efficient. There are three important factors that determine the filtration efficiency of activated carbon filters: quantity, exposure time, and particle size. The more carbon a water filter contains, the better. Likewise, the more time the contaminants are in contact with activated carbon, the better they are adsorbed. The removal rate of AC filters is also influenced by their particle size. The particle size can range from 50 microns to 0.5 microns, which is the most efficient.
